Transforming your backyard with the warm glow of string lights is a popular trend. However, before you start draping these twinkling decorations, it’s essential to navigate the approval process.
We — your Alamar Community Life team — want to ensure that your cozy ambiance enhances your home without inadvertently affecting your neighbors.
The first step
Before giving your partner the “honey do” list, dive into the Residential Design Guidelines, specifically the section dedicated to string lights (pages 25-26). This handbook will be your blueprint, detailing everything from the maximum allowable length of your string lights to the type of bulbs that strike the perfect balance between charm and illumination.
The next step involves submitting a Design Review Application to get the green light or receive constructive feedback.

Placement guidelines
Height and orientation
Ensure lights are hung no higher than 10 feet and no lower than 7 feet off the ground, maintaining a horizontal orientation.
Bulb limits
There’s a cap on both the number of bulbs (50) and the total length of string lights (100 feet) to prevent excessive brightness.
Operating hours
Lights should be turned off by 10 p.m. to minimize disturbance, except when the area is in use.
How regulations help you
Installing string lights in your backyard is about more than just beautifying your personal space; it’s a process that requires thoughtful planning, adherence to community standards, and consideration for the comfort of your neighbors.
By following the Alamar Design Review Committee’s guidelines, you’re not only lighting up your backyard but also contributing to the overall harmony and aesthetic of your community. So, as you plan your outdoor lighting, remember that a little forethought goes a long way in creating an inviting atmosphere that everyone can appreciate.
The 2 feet rule
Keeping posts at least 2 feet from fences mitigates light spill into neighboring properties, addressing concerns about intrusive brightness.
The two pole limit
The light curfew
This rule is about neighborliness, reducing potential disturbances during the night.
